Friends and English Elegance // Joe T. Johnson

To start, let’s talk about ‘Friends‘ the twee indie-pop banger. There is a definite style that Joe has that he has absolutely mastered here, the catchy riffs and multi layered guitar work which instantly makes you think this could be a 60s b-side from the Doors or Kinks but then, as soon as I heard the opener I was instantly put in mind of The Smiths and Echo & the Bunnymen.

I don’t mean to gush about Joe’s sound but he consistently hits the nail on the head with all his singles, it’s almost like he is Biff with the Grays Sports Almanac in Back to the Future (random reference but I’m feeling nostalgic).

English Elegance is an awesome Western tinged Beatles track. There is a growth that you can really hear, every element of the track is formed around each other, I can’t remember the last time I heard a track where every element has been so closely considered.

I always mention drums, (I’m a drummer, so I have a soft spot) I love that there is an attention given even down to the micro fills in these songs.

Anyhow, give them a listen and leave a comment!

One last thing, these covers are genius.
